As more states enact restrictive abortion laws in response to the withdrawal of federal rights to abortion, access to reproductive health services in the U.S. is of increasing concern. This primer describes a series of “open door” legal pathways to access abortion services in the U.S., explains who may be able to utilize a specific pathway to access abortion services, and delineates various actual or potential limitations related to accessing abortions via each pathway. |

| State-based Abortion Protections
The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court has prompted many states to reexamine their abortion protection laws. This resource lists states that currently expressly protect abortion rights; those that have interpreted their state constitutions as protecting a right to abortion; states that are proposing statutory or constitutional action to affirm a right to abortion; and current litigation regarding state-based abortion rights. |

| Fighting for Public Health: How Do We Strengthen Public Health Advocacy at Local, State, and National Levels? February 23, 2023 | 1:00 – 2:30 pm EST
Attend this webinar to obtain insights and the key take-aways from a feasibility study, commissioned by the Network, in which public health advocates and leaders from 45 organizations where asked how we can strengthen public health advocacy. Their responses provided a picture of the current state of affairs in public health and opportunities to strengthen the voice of public health in advocating for evidence-based, sound public health approaches and policies, and for the profession and practice of public health itself.

Public Health Authority Litigation Tracking
As part of the Act for Public Health initiative, Public Health Law Watch is tracking public health authority-related litigation. Included in the most recent update is a summary of oral arguments heard by the Eleventh Circuit Court in the CDC transportation mask mandate case; the Texas Supreme Court decision to consider challenges to Governor Abbott’s ban on mask mandates; a lawsuit filed by parents who claim the Riverhead Central School District in Long Island, New York’s, mask requirements caused their children “emotional distress;” and a case brought by unvaccinated Navy personnel who claim they are still facing discrimination even after the military COVID-19 vaccine mandate was lifted. Public Health Law Clerk, Health Equity & Social Justice
The Network is seeking Public Health Law Clerks to work with its Health and Racial Equity program. Clerks will assist attorneys with providing legal technical assistance and developing tools and educational materials on public health law topics. The Network will provide a wide range of projects and opportunities that will build Law Clerks’ knowledge of public health law and foster connections in the field. Rising 2L and 3L students with a strong interest in public health law are encouraged to apply. The start date is flexible, but the preference is to have the Law Clerks start work in late May with an expected commitment of 8-10 weeks of full-time work. All work will be completed remotely. Program Manager, Climate Education
The American Public Health Association (APHA) is seeking a program manager to implement APHA’s climate change activities as they relate to education at the K-12 and college level. The manager will be responsible for monitoring budgets, grant management, and program development and execution. The manager will serve as the primary liaison to key APHA member units, as well as other various partner organizations and will work closely with colleagues in communications to amplify the work of the Center for Climate, Health and Equity; provides resources, educational opportunities, and project updates to students and teachers engaged in this work; and conducts research and analysis to develop products and materials as needed. Senior Project Manager, Smart Surfaces
The American Public Health Association’s APHA) Center for Climate, Health and Equity (CCHE) will work with state affiliates and partners across the country to encourage the adoption of Smart Surfaces that can help reduce rising city temperatures and create more equitable health outcomes. APHA is seeking an experienced manager for this project with the Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) to address extreme heat at the local level. APHA Affiliates and partners in six U.S. metropolitan areas will embark on local policy campaigns with strategic, technical, and operational support from the CCHE and SSC over the course of this three-year project.
