The backlash in response to public health measures taken during the pandemic has resulted in many states passing laws restricting the ability of public health to take action to protect the health of communities. However, there are many states that have taken innovative actions that strengthen public health authority and provide mechanisms that support a strong public health infrastructure. This Network report examines laws and policies being enacted across the U.S. in six categories — funding, governance, equity, infrastructure, workforce, and public health interventions and emergency orders — that serve as a model for best practices moving forward. As One State Strides Forward on Evidence-Based Drug Policy, Another Slides Back
Unlike how they regulate the far more deadly drug products tobacco and alcohol, states overwhelmingly continue to treat individuals who use illicit drugs as criminals, and state law is oriented towards arresting, prosecuting, and incarcerating them. A few states, however, have made more significant changes, and some have made less drastic but still important changes. |

Requiring licensure for lactation consultants can lead to increased quality of lactation-based care, but it can also create barriers to entering the profession. The Network for Public Health Law is currently inviting eligible candidates to apply for a full scholarship to the Network’s Public Health Law Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, October 24-26, 2023. The Sallie Milam Public Health Data Scholarship will include registration for the pre-conference data session, “Getting to ‘Yes’ for Public Health: Tribal Organization Use of Health Data Held by State and Local Health Departments,” in addition to registration for the full conference. The Network is seeking a Deputy Director of Policy, Equity, and Community Impact to support our efforts to strengthen the connections between public health agencies and communities, with the goal of building engagement and capacity in law and policy to advance public health. The Deputy Director will lead strategy development, manage programs, provide technical assistance on specific issues, conduct training, develop tools and education materials, and facilitate opportunities for networking and peer assistance. Program Coordinator, Mid-States Region Office
The Network is seeking a Program Coordinator to join the team at its Mid-States Region Office to provide operations and program support. The Program Coordinator’s primary responsibility will be to assist the Mid-States team in managing a variety of projects and related activities. This work includes developing and maintaining an organized system for monitoring grants and contracts, tracking deliverables, reporting and invoicing.
