With the recission of the federal declaration of public health emergency, tenants lost some protections from the CARES Act and related federal policies. Proposals in the Biden Administration’s Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights (Blueprint) provide avenues to support tenants in housing and project based rental assistance and expand those protections as negotiated measures between Freddie Mac and the landlord community. This article, the fifth in a series, examines the role of federal government in protecting tenants.

Repeal of Paraphernalia Laws: Minnesota Leads the Way
State laws that make it illegal to distribute or use items such as sterile syringes and smoking equipment have resulted in near record levels of drug overdose, hepatitis C infections and injection-related endocarditis due to the sharing of injections and inhalation supplies. Many advocates and observers, including members of the Network’s Harm Reduction Legal Project, have long advocated for the complete repeal of these harmful laws. Minnesota recently became the first state to do so.

Law and Policy Pathways to Preventing Housing Instability
Housing instability is a public health problem that both causes and exacerbates health problems, erodes communities, and drives health inequities. Eviction specifically imposes damaging health consequences that can last lifetimes, or even generations. This resource outlines laws and policies at both the state and community level that can work to address these negative impacts and promote housing stability. |

The State of State-level Public Health Advocacy January 18, 2024 | 1:00-2:30p.m. ET

2024 International Indigenous Women’s Health Meeting March 13–15, 2024
The International Indigenous Women’s Health Meeting will be held March 13–15 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference focuses on innovative obstetric and gynecologic clinical care models and community‐based public health approaches for Indigenous women and families. During the conference, participants will strengthen their knowledge of the health problems facing Indigenous communities, learn promising strategies to improve wellness, and acquire practical skills. 2024 Preparedness Summit March 25-28, 2024
The 2024 Preparedness Summit will be held March 25–28 in Cleveland, Ohio. The theme of the summit is “Public Health, Healthcare, and Emergency Management: Aligning to Address Cascading Challenges.” The summit will bring together attendees from all areas of practice including emergency management, academia, and government at the federal, state, and local levels. The call for abstracts for the 2024 NACCHO360 Conference, to be held July 23–26, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan, is now open. Public health professionals are invited to share their research findings, best practice training models, tools, or other resources that advance the field of public health and healthcare. Abstract submissions will be accepted through December 31, 2023. |

The Network is seeking a Region Director to provide strategic and organizational leadership for the Network’s Western Region team. This role is responsible for overseeing the Region’s strategic and sustainability planning, day-to-day operations, legal technical assistance, outreach efforts, and product development activities.
