The Network for Public Health Law Announces Search for New National Director

The Network for Public Health Law (Network) is searching for a new National Director to provide strategic direction, lead organizational development, and oversee the work of its National Office and five Region Offices. The ideal candidate is an energetic hands-on leader with unquestionable integrity and high ethical standards, who is able to lead and inspire with an entrepreneurial mindset. The National Director must have exceptional ability to proactively engage and facilitate discussions with a broad range of stakeholders to champion the Network and its mission to provide visionary leadership in the use of law to protect, promote, and improve health and health equity. As the position is integral to ensuring organizational stability and growth, the National Director must have a strong track record in identifying and securing diverse sources of revenue, including philanthropic and government funding, as well as earned-income. The Network’s current National Director, Donna E. Levin, is retiring from her role on July 1 after a remarkable career which spanned 44 years in public health law, eight of those at the Network. In her time leading the Network, Donna served as chief architect and advocate of the organization’s vision to provide the public health community with practical steps for moving evidence into law, and law into practice, mobilizing the Network and its partners in pursuit of that vision. Most recently, Donna led the Network’s efforts as co-convener of Act for Public Health, an initiative designed to strengthen public health protections for communities across the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Starting July 1 and until the new National Director joins the organization, the Network will be led by National Co-Directors Kathleen Hoke, currently director of the Network’s Eastern Region Office, and Ann Phi-Wendt, managing director of the Network’s National Office. Kathleen will oversee the work of the five Region Offices, with Ann managing Network operations and programs.

A Transition Committee comprising leaders at the Network’s National Office and Region Offices, along with the Network’s National Advisory Board, will oversee the process to choose the new National Director.

About the Network for Public Health Law

The Network is a national leader in supporting and advancing the use of law to protect, promote, and improve health and health equity. The Network works with local, tribal, state and federal public health policymakers, officials, attorneys and practitioners, as well as community health leaders and advocates across the country, providing information, resources, consultation and training, as well as opportunities to connect. The Network has provided guidance and assistance to thousands in the public health community on numerous fronts including increasing health care access through the ACA, combating the opioid epidemic, expanding public health data sharing, and addressing housing and food insecurity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations, including the National Governors Association along with local and state health departments, reached out to the Network for our leadership and expertise.

As the call intensifies to address other critical issues impacting the nation’s health including systemic racism, climate change, and increasing legislative efforts to diminish the ability of public health professional to act to protect the public’s health, the Network is serving as an indispensable resource for facilitating changes in law and policies to ensure equitable health outcomes for all.
